Unstoppable Domains is a San Francisco-based tech company that allows customers to create domain names based on blockchain technology. The company was founded in 2018 by Matthew Gould and Bogdan Gusiev, who serve as Unstoppable Domains' CEO and CTO, respectively. Unstoppable Domains' goal is to bridge the gap between Web2, the current iteration of the internet, and Web3, a proposed version of the internet to run on the blockchain. Using an Unstoppable Domain allows customers to create a blockchain-connected web address similar to a URL, such as sample.crypto or sample.coin. These blockchain domain names help translate the addresses of cryptocurrency wallets into a name that is easier to understand while connecting the website to similar decentralized apps (dApps) or exchanges.
Unstoppable Domains is built upon the Crypto Name Service (CNS), a set of Ethereum smart contracts that decide how blockchain domains are created and utilized. Each CNS domain is issued as an ERC-721 token, also known as a non-fungible token (NFT)—a unique, indivisible token that represents a one-of-a-kind digital asset. Using NFTs allows Unstoppable Domains to be easily integrated into other applications and also gives users complete ownership over their domain name, as opposed to just renting it. As of 2022, Unstoppable Domains has registered more than 3 million domain names and is compatible with the Brave, Opera, Chrome, Firefox, and Edge web browsers.
