Wilhelm Ostwald was a German chemist born on September 2, 1853, in Riga . He was known for his work in physical chemistry , including the law of dilution , the Ostwald process , and Ostwald ripening . Ostwald also worked as a physicist, philosopher, writer, teacher, and Esperantist .
Ostwald was educated at the University of Tartu , where his doctoral advisor was Arthur von Oettingen . He had several notable doctoral students, including Fritz Pregl, Ejnar Hertzsprung, Arthur Amos Noyes, Max Trautz, Alwin Mittasch, George Cecil Jaffe, and Sergey Reformatsky .
Ostwald made significant contributions to the field of catalysis and is credited with coining the term "mole" . He was awarded the 1909 Nobel Prize in Chemistry and the Faraday Lectureship Prize . Ostwald died on April 4, 1932, in Leipzig, Germany .
