Albany FireWolves is an Albany, New York-based box lacrosse team that was founded in 2021. Its name came to be when a box lacrosse team moved to Albany and needed a new name. More than 2,000 submissions for name suggestions were made online, and over 4,000 people voted on the Albany FireWolves. The name is also a reference to the indigenous roots of the sport and was chosen to honor that.
It is in the National Lacrosse League (NLL) and is part of the league's East Division, where it joins others in the division, including Philadelphia Wings, Rochester Knighthawks, Toronto Rock, New York Riptide, Buffalo Bandits, Georgia Swarm, and Halifax Thunderbirds. The team plays its home games at Times Union Center, where fans can buy season tickets, single-game tickets, and more.
There are more than twenty players on the team, originating from places such as the United States and Canada. The Albany FireWolves finished their first season in 2021-2022 with nine wins and nine losses. They were one of four teams to make it to the playoffs for the East Division during the 2021-2022 season.
