The Halifax Thunderbirds is a Halifax-based box lacrosse team that started playing for the National Lacrosse League in the 2019-2020 season. It plays in the Scotiabank Centre in Halifax for its home games. It is part of the East Division of the NLL, which also includes teams such as Philadelphia Wings, Rochester Knighthawks, Toronto Rock, New York Riptide, Buffalo Bandits, Georgia Swarm, and Albany FireWolves.
The team has more than twenty players and won eight games and lost four during its first season in 2019-2020, which was cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The regular season for the sport usually consists of eighteen games, and the Halifax Thunderbirds only played twelve.In the 2021-2022 season, the team won eleven games and had seven losses. The Halifax Thunderbirds made it to the playoffs but lost to Toronto Rock.
The Halifax Thunderbirds are associated with several programs to engage with the community, specifically the youth. There is a "Sticks for Kidz" program, in which the team players visit schools to teach box lacrosse to the students and allow them to try it. Another program is a reading program, in which the players educate the students on the origins of the game.
