Casetext is a San Francisco-based technology company specializing in developing artificial intelligence (AI)-powered tools for attorneys. It was founded in 2013 by Jake Heller, Laura Safdie, and Pablo Arredondo, who were focused on developing new approaches to legal research.
Casetext initially offered an AI-powered legal research service. It expanded its offerings in 2019 when the company launched CARA, an AI assistant that helps attorneys find cases on the same facts, legal issues, and jurisdiction. When a brief or complaint is dragged and dropped, CARA finds on-point cases. It offers filters such as motion type, party type, and cause of action to narrow results.
In March 2023, Casetext launched an AI-powered legal assistant called CoCounsel. The tool uses GPT-4 and can conduct document reviews, deposition preparation, and contract analysis.
