Harvey is a developer of an artificial intelligence (AI) assistant for lawyers. The application is developed to provide lawyers with legal tools and help them with legal workflows, including editing legal documents, performing legal research, and following instructions posed in natural language. The interface of the application allows lawyers to interface through the description of legal tasks rather than understand how to navigate through an interface. The company was founded in 2022 by Winston Weinberg, a former associate at the law firm O'Melveny & Myers, and Gabriel Pereyra, a former research scientist at DeepMind and machine learning engineer at Meta AI. Harvey is headquartered in San Francisco.
Harvey is building its AI platform based on OpenAI's GPT-4 generation system to offer lawyers a natural language interface for existing workflows. Harvey is developed, in that case, to provide lawyers the ability to describe the task they wish to accomplish in natural language instruction and receive the generated result. The AI platform uses a large language model to understand both the user's questions and intent to generate the correct output. Harvey is developed to make lawyers more efficient and allow lawyers using the platform to produce higher quality work, all through its unified and intuitive interface developed specifically for legal workflows. However, the developers have noted that the software is not intended to be used to provide legal advice, and as of 2023, it includes a legal disclaimer saying as much.
In 2023, Harvey already attracted some companies with the technology, including a partnership with PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP, which launched a legal chatbot with Harvey in March of 2023, and to help the firm with the workflows of its legal professional network. And the law firm of Allen & Overy joined Harvey to develop legal systems with the technology as well.
