Happiest Baby was founded by pediatrician and best-selling author of The Happiest Baby on the Block and The Happiest Toddler on the Block, Dr. Harvey Karp, and his wife and business partner Nina Montee Karp. The company is developing a suite of smart solutions for new parents based on Dr. Karp's insights into the neurodevelopment of young children.
The company’s product SNOO Smart Sleeper, released in 2016, is a smart baby bed which provides womb-like rumbly sound and gentle rocking. When SNOO sensing fussing, it responds with more motion and sound, which can calm the baby in under a minute unless they are hungry or uncomfortable. The product is claimed to naturally sleep train babies over the first few months of life. A SNOO special swaddle keeps babies safely on their back, as advised by the American Academy of Pediatrics.
Dr. Karp collaborated with industrial designer and founder of Fuseproject Yves Béhar and Dr. Deb Roy, director of MIT Media Lab’s Laboratory for Social Machines for development of SNOO. SNOO won Innovation of the Year from the National Sleep Foundation and an award for top innovation from the Juvenile Product Manufacturing Association.
University-based research studies at UCSD, Harvard, University of Amsterdam, University of Kentucky, University of Michigan and University of North Carolina are being conducted to evaluate the medical benefits of SNOO for boosting infant sleep, treatment/prevention of postpartum depression, reduction in infant sleep deaths and support of newborns withdrawing from opiates.
Several employers are renting SNOO to new parents to boost productivity and reduce fatigue-related errors, accidents and health costs, including Activision Blizzard, Snap, Dow Jones, Qualcomm, Indigo Books and Music, Button, Cooley LLP and The Motherhood Center of New York.
Another Happiest Baby product is the Sleepea swaddle which is breathable and cannot unravel and cause loose cloths around the baby’s face. The company also sells books, CDs and DVDs about infant/child behavior.
Happiest Baby announced in December 2018 that it had raised $23 Million in Series B funding in a round led by Greycroft Partners with participation from Sallfort Bank and GV. The A round of funding raised $10 million in 2015 with funding led by Lux Capital, with Felicis Ventures and Obvious Ventures and included investments from Justin Timberlake, Jessica Biel, Scarlett Johansson and Zoe Saldana.
