Kong, formerly Mashape, is a software company offering open-source platforms and cloud services for application programming interface (API) and microservices. The company is headquartered in San Francisco, California and was founded in 2007 by Augusto Marietti and Marco Palladino. The company rebranded as Kong, from Mashape, in October 2017. Ahead of its rebranding exercise, Mashape/Kong sold off its API marketplace to RapidAPI.
On April 1, 2010, Kong completed an angel funding round with $101,000 in funding from Massimo Sgrelli, Kevin Donahue, Dwipal Desai, and David Estrada.
On August 15, 2011, Kong completed a seed funding round with $1.5 million in funding from New Enterprise Associates, Charles River Ventures, Ignition Partners, Innovation Endeavours, Mucker Capital, Jeff Bezos, Erik Rannala, Russel Siegelman, Mike Voipi, Lars Kamp, and Rick Webb.
On November 21, 2013, Kong completed its series A funding round with $6.5 million in funding from Index Ventures (lead investor), Stanford University, and CRV.
On March 23, 2017, Kong completed its series B funding round with $18 million in funding from Andreessen Horowitz, Index Ventures, and CRV.
On March 28, 2019, Kong completed its series C funding round with $43 million in funding from Index Ventures (lead investor), World Innovation Lab, GGV Capital, CRV, and Andreessen Horowitz.
