LAFORGE Optical is a company that has developed prescription eyewear that can sync to a smart device via Bluetooth. The company was founded in 2014 by Corey Mack, in Los Angeles, Californiaand has operations in Seoul and Bangkok. The company uses a system of prisms and lenses to display augmented reality elements in front of a user. This includes other modifications, such as a teleprompter, wireless music controls, health tracking, messaging, notifications, and weather notifications on the lenses.
LAFORGE Optical uses engineering and design to seamlessly integrate electronics and precision optics into a minimal form-factor to make digital eyewear that thoroughly integrates a virtual display into a prescription lens. The glasses are designed to look like a normal pair of glasses and are made to differentiate themselves from virtual reality headsets and the Google Glass. Each pair of glasses is built to fit the user's face, with the proper corrective lens, and is priced to be less expensive than a headset or other brand of smart-eye-wear. LAFORGE Optical also provides an SDK to make applications compatible with the eyewear.
LAFORGE boasts a battery life of eighteen hours for their glasses and only a thirty-minute charge time. The software inside the frames is capable of measuring a user's speed and can detect when someone is driving, once they are traveling over 17 miles per hour. Users can also take pictures and record videos with the Shima Beta Bold version of the frames.
