VRChat is a San Francisco-based technology company that specializes in community-oriented virtual reality. Users can bring their own 3D content onto the platform and it can be transformed into a social experience. As of 2018, more than four million people have used the platform.
The company's product can be used on Steam, Oculus, or in the VRChat mobile application and is free to use. It has a software development kit that users can utilize to run their own virtual reality spaces and activities on the platform. Users can pick their own avatars and interact with people from all over the world on VRChat. Communication with others can take form via audio, chat, hand gestures using the avatar, and games. Games that are offered include Capture the Flag and bowling. There are also weekly events that users can remotely attend.
VRChat has a Quick Menu that is to be used to access almost all of the features on the platform. Options include direct interactions, microphones, worlds menu, avatar menu, social menu, and systems menu.
In 2021, VRChat announced the company had raised an $80 million Series D funding round to help expedite the development of a new creator economy in which members can earn money, offer an enhanced social discovery system to create new experiences, expand VRChat's product to more platforms, and further grow to allow more people to access VRChat's virtual universe.
This comes as competitor platforms, such as Rec Room, have tried developing digital creator economies, in which they have offered creators financial rewards for developing on the app, creating premium experiences, avatar accessories, and in-game gadgets. It also comes as more blockchain companies and Meta (formerly Facebook) have announced and developed more virtual spaces similar to VRChat's, with creator economies built-in.
