The Allen Institute for AI (AI2) is a non-profit research institute conducting artificial intelligence (AI) research and engineering. AI2 employs over 200 researchers, engineers, and support staff across multiple sites, including a branch in Israel (AI2 Israel) with programs in computer vision and perception (PRIOR), commonsense reasoning (Mosaic), natural language processing (AllenNLP), and AI for the environment. The institute has undertaken a number of projects aiming to make AI advances across a range, including science, medicine, and conservation.
AI2 was founded on January 1st, 2014, by Paul Allen (philanthropist and Microsoft cofounder) with the aim of exploring critical questions in the field of AI. Allen passed away on October 15, 2018. AI2 is headquartered in Seattle. AI2 is governed by a board of directors that helps decide institution-level goals and a scientific advisory board that provides guidance for impactful AI research. Oren Etzioni was chief executive officer (CEO) at AI2 from its founding until September 30, 2022. Ali Farhadi became the new CEO on July 31, 2023. Etzioni now serves as an advisor & board member for AI2 and a technical director of the AI2 Incubator.
During COVID-19, AI2 partnered with other research groups to distribute the COVID-19 Open Research Dataset (CORD-19), a free resource of over 1 million scholarly articles about COVID-19 and the coronavirus family of viruses. The dataset is intended for researchers to apply natural language processing to generate new insights that support the fight against COVID-19.
Researchers at AI2 developed OLMo, an open language model promoting the study of large-scale NLP systems. AI2 aims to build OLMo in a transparent manner, releasing artifacts and documentation throughout the project. On August 18, 2023, the institute released the first data artifact, Dolma, a dataset of 3 trillion tokens from a diverse range of web content that includes academic publications, code, books, and encyclopedic materials. Dolma is openly available for download on HuggingFace under AI2’s ImpACT license.
