Franz Boas (born Franz Uri Boas) was a German-American anthropologist, geographer, curator, and philosopher, born on July 9, 1858, in Minden . He held citizenship in the German Confederation, German Empire, and the United States . Boas is best known for his notable work, "The Mind of Primitive Man" .
Boas received education at the University of Bonn, Heidelberg University, and the University of Kiel . Over his career, Boas mentored several doctoral students, such as Edward Sapir, Margaret Mead, Ruth Benedict, Alfred L. Kroeber, and many others, who later went on to make their own contributions to anthropological and geographical fields .
Franz Boas passed away on December 21, 1942, in New York City . He had two children: Ernst Philip Boas and Franziska Boas .
